The avenue of poplars at Vimy Ridge have a wonderful historical association, planted in 1919 as a memorial by a local landowner to mark the death of his son and the other 183 officers and men of the Sherwood Foresters in the Battle of the Somme. Poignantly, the number of trees is the same as the number of lives lost.
Poplar trees have approximately the same lifespan as a man, and sadly the avenue has now been felled.
The avenue has been preserved be replanting the trees, although it will be some years before they give the same distinctive landscape of mature trees.
This painting was completed in 2003 just before the first trees were felled. The remaining mature trees were taken down in February 2008.
